HOW TO ADOPT

Adoption is a life long process for adoptive families. One of the first steps in this process is to figure out which type of adoption best suits a particular family.

There are three types of adoption: Adoption from foster care, domestic infant and international. If you are interested in learning more about domestic infant or international adoptions, please contact the Adoption Community of New England, Inc. at 1-800-93-ADOPT.

MARE is involved with adoption from foster care (also referred to as special needs adoption). All of the children MARE serves are in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Social Services (DSS), and the majority of these children are ages six and older, children of color of all ages, sibling groups, children with intellectual, emotional or physical difficulties or disabilities, and children at legal risk. MARE works with DSS and private agencies that contract with DSS to find permanent, loving homes for these children.

To learn more about the steps to adopting a child from foster care, please take some time to review the following:

  • Choosing Adoption: The MARE Guide to Adopting a Waiting Child, a guide about adopting a child from foster care (pdf 565 KB) English - Espanol
  • Frequently Asked Questions about Adopting a Child from Foster Care (pdf 98.7 KB) English - Espanol
  • Adopting in Massachusetts, a book from the Center for Adoption Research at UMass about all types of adoption

For a complete list of resources, please visit our Adoption Resources page.

Anyone seeking adoption information can call MARE. Staff members are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to answer questions regarding specific children and the adoption process in general. We can send you an information packet and/or refer you to adoption agencies to start the process. Please contact us at 617-54-ADOPT (617-542-3678) or 1-800-882-1176 or fill out an Information Request Form.

We look forward to working with you through your adoption journey. Please visit the Family Info. and Programs & Services sections of our website to learn more about MARE and the children who are waiting for adoptive families.
