Friend of the Family mentor program
The Friend of the Family Mentor Program provides mentors for prospective adoptive families. From beginning to end, the adoption process can be overwhelming and bring unforeseen challenges. Through this program, prospective adoptive families will be matched with an experienced adoptive parent(s) who can provide the understanding of someone who has gone through similar experiences. We consistently hear from families that the most helpful support is often from other families who have been through it.
Mentees: We welcome mentee families who are beginning the adoption process, completing a homestudy, currently waiting for a match, or newly matched/placed. Whenever possible, we work to pair mentees with a mentor family with similarities in regards to geography, family constellation, parenting experience, age range of child, etc. To apply to be a mentee, please complete and submit an Application to be a Mentee.
Mentors: We seek experienced adoptive parents who will provide encouragement, share their own experiences, and acquaint families with helpful resources and services. To become a Friend of the Family mentor, you must:
- Have finalized an adoption from foster care
- Have had a positive working relationship with DCF or contracted private agency
- Commit to maintaining weekly to monthly contact with your mentee via phone, email or in person
- Complete and submit an Application to be a Mentor so we can get to know you better
