Introduction

John is a sweet, kind, caring, and silly young man who loves music, movement, and spending time with people. He has a wonderful sense of humor and enjoys finding fun in everyday activities. Music is a big part of John's world—he loves listening to music, music class, musical instruments, and dance parties. He also enjoys toys that light up or play music, fidgets, bubbles, and using his iPad.

John is an active young man who enjoys walks, outdoor trails, movement breaks, and time in the gym, especially swinging. He appreciates leisure and downtime, too, and enjoys having opportunities to relax between activities. John loves snacks, with favorites including chips, puffs, peanut butter, and applesauce!

John communicates in his own unique and meaningful ways. He uses an AAC device on his iPad, gestures, and physical communication to express his wants and needs. John may point to something he wants or take a trusted adult's hand to communicate. Adults who model and encourage AAC use help John communicate successfully.

John has developed healthy and meaningful relationships with the staff at his school. He enjoys positive physical interactions such as high fives, side hugs, and hand or head squeezes and will appropriately seek out this type of connection from people he trusts.

John will benefit from a patient and understanding family who is comfortable learning about the needs of an adolescent with autism and supporting him with communication, daily living skills, and medical needs. An active family who enjoys being outdoors, taking walks, and participating in community activities would be a wonderful fit for John.

John thrives with predictable routines, visual schedules, and preparation for changes. First/Then language, a kind and playful approach, and access to movement breaks can help him stay regulated and engaged. His school day includes ELA, math, science, history, music, art, and gym. He also participates in vocational activities on campus, including collecting recycling throughout the building.

John is looking for a family who will celebrate his unique way of communicating, appreciate his playful personality, and provide the patience, consistency, and support he needs to thrive. A family willing to learn alongside John and share plenty of music, movement, outdoor adventures, and joyful everyday moments could help him build the lifelong sense of belonging he deserves.
