Description
In this workshop, Dr. Adams offers a clear, compassionate look at what it means to parent with both trauma-informed wisdom and racial awareness inside a transracial family. Blending decades of clinical expertise with the honest realities of raising two adopted teens, he breaks down how trauma shapes behavior, how culture and identity layer into daily experiences, and why connection, not control, must lead the way.
Parents will learn how to recognize survival-based behaviors, build safety and trust through TBRI® principles, and respond to meltdowns and hard moments without escalating the cycle. Dr. Adams also speaks candidly about the unique dynamics of transracial parenting what helps, what harms, and how to support a child’s identity with intention, humility, and truth.
About Dr. Adams:
Dr. Adams is a licensed psychologist, licensed professional clinical counselor, a board-certified behavior analyst, and a Trust-Based Relational Interventions® (TBRI®) practitioner.
Although not an easy task, Dr. Adams is a proud transracial adoptive parent of two teens and has managed so far to keep his sanity in the process. He serves as the President and Founder of New Life Psychology Group Laguna Hills, CA. In addition, Dr. Adams teaches behavior analysis as a part time professor at National University. As a trainer of Foster Kinship Care Education (FKCE) of Saddleback College, he enjoys teaching monthly workshops to foster and adoptive parents and professionals.
Understanding the hardships and challenges of raising children with traumatic backgrounds, Dr. Adams has a craft to incorporate his own experiences as an adoptive parent to his audience. The heart-warming story of Dr. Adams and his two adoptive children (Andrew and Kayla) was featured in CBS’ A Home for the Holiday in December 2019. Dr. Adams has written a book called “Trauma-Informed Foster and Adoptive Parenting: Methods for Managing Meltdowns, Mishaps, and Maladaptive Behaviors” published by Routledge Press. He is in the process of coauthoring another book for professionals on Trauma-Informed behavior analysis as well.
